Hunters of Helmsley is celebrating the Olympics by serving up a taste of Rio in the form of a classically Brazilian Bauru sandwich.

While the athletes stick to carefully-planned diets, fans back in Britain can now get a taste of Rio right in Ryedale. The Bauru sandwich, huge in Brazil, was created by law student Casemiro Pinto Neto, known by his nickname ‘Bauru’ back in the 1930s.

This sarnie consists of crusty bread, locally sourced beef home-cooked at Hunters, melted mozzarella, zingy pickles and juicy tomatoes. The South American treat will be available at the store throughout the games for £4.50.

Christine Garnett, who owns Hunters of Helmsley with her husband Chris, said: “We always love to celebrate exciting occasions and of course events don’t get much bigger than the Olympic games.

"After doing some research into Brazilian food, we came across the story of the Bauru sandwich. We decided to try it out and after one bite we knew we had picked a winner. It really is a delicious recipe and one that we’re sure people will enjoy trying – a little taste of Rio right here in the North York Moors."
