Game, set and strawberry match

On to something berry good. Strawberries
and cream available through the ice cream
window during Wimbledon.
Today marks the beginning of Wimbledon, the oldest tennis tournament in the world, and to celebrate, Hunters of Helmsley is providing strawberries and cream to customers looking for a taste of the action.

Along with world-class sport, the tournament also brings a great feeling of British tradition and some delicious customary treats. As the likes of Novac Djokovic, Serena Williams and Andy Murray take to the centre court, not only do Wimbledon-goers enjoy 330,000 cups of tea and coffee, they also consume 140,000 portions of English strawberries, taken from 8,615 punnets and served with 10,000 litres of dairy cream.

Strawberries and cream will be available to buy through the ice-cream window of Hunters of Helmsley until 10 July. The deli, which last year won the title of Britain’s Best Small Shop, has been based on Helmsley’s bustling Market Place for over 25 years.

Christine Garnett, who owns the shop with her husband Chris, said: “Wimbledon is such a special time of year, it brings about a real sense of community and allows us to celebrate very British traditions and excellent sport.

"As a local shop which prides itself on supporting the British economy through the trade of local produce we wanted to get involved in festivities and provide a fun option for local people to experience. We hope that everyone will enjoy coming along to sample some of our delicious strawberries and cream. We’ve also Brymor’s delicious locally made strawberry ice cream if that’s more to your taste.”
