Hunters launches gluten-free range

Gluten-free Bakewell Tart
by Vida Villi.
Hunters of Helmsley is introducing a range of gluten-free goodies to mark the start of Coeliac Awareness Week which gets under way today (Monday 9 May).

Sutton on the Forest-based Vida Villi will now supply a fully-certified range of gluten-free frozen savouries and fresh cakes.

Coeliac disease is a lifelong autoimmune disease caused by a reaction to gluten. One in 100 people have the condition, and many more believe themselves to have some level of intolerance to gluten. It is believed that up to 45 per cent of people in the UK could have some element of food sensitivities.

Vida Villi makes its food with fresh and locally sourced produce, where available. The savouries available in store include roasted Mediterranean vegetable quiche; brie, cranberry and caramelised onion quiche; Harrogate blue and red onion quiche; Cheddar cheese and spring onion pie; and curried potato and spinach pie.  For those with a sweet tooth, the deli will also stock the company’s millionaire’s shortbread, chocolate brownie, Bakewell tart and Yorkshire parkin.

In store tastings will take place on Friday from 1pm..

Hunters’ owner Christine Garnett suffers from food allergies herself. She said: “It was only a few years ago when my allergies developed, it can happen at any age, and it can be very difficult adapting your diet overnight.

"It can also be hard to find delicious, ready to eat foods – especially ones that are reasonably priced. When I tested the Vida Villi products I was blown away. They taste really good, and you can tell that this has been a labour of love for Carole, who runs the company, and is herself a sufferer of coeliac disease.”

Hunters has been based on Helmsley’s picturesque market place for 26 years. Hunters last year received the accolade of being crowned Britain’s best small shop, at an event held at the House of Commons. Further information
