Boots to book: Cleveland Way tale author's Sunday signing

Best foot forward: author
 Andrew Nichol.
Helmsley's Cut Price Book Store hosts a signing on Sunday (8 May) with the author of a novel which follows the true and funny tale of seven young men walking the Cleveland Way in 1974.

We'll Have a Laugh by Andrew Nichol details the humorous, and at times challenging, experiences the boys face as they hike along the well known track. The book is full of nostalgia, especially the music of the glam rock era.

Helmsley itself features in the book as the starting point of the Cleveland Way and where the adventure begins.

Andrew will be signing books from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

He said: "Coming back to Helmsley brings to mind some wonderful memories of those days back in 1974.

"Whilst writing the book I got in touch with all of the other hikers and they all say the experience was a milestone in their lives and something they will never forget.

"We were, and still are, a very diverse group with strong characters and differing interests.  I am the bird-watching countryman, three were members of a rock band, there is a religious history buff, the school sports captain and an excitable Greek who was prone to saying inappropriate things at inappropriate moments.

"It all made for quite an adventure. I hope the book inspires others to follow in our footsteps and walk this totally unique route which combines moor and coast in a way no other can.”

The Cleveland Way runs 110 miles in a horseshoe shape from Helmsley to Filey, skirting the North York Moors National Park. The trail officially opened in 1969.
