Invitation goes out to community to help mark Chinese Year of the Monkey

The University of York's Chinese students are inviting local folks to share an evening of spectacle, dance and music as they celebrate their New Year on Friday (19 February).

The event features a professional team of dragon and lion dancers, fashion show, Chinese folk music orchestra and even a performance on the art of making tea.

The Chinese New Year Gala is being held at 7pm on 19 February at the university’s Central Hall and will be a celebration of the Spring and Lantern Festivals, heralding the Year of the Monkey.

The aims to help the whole community understand more about traditional Chinese culture, as well as helping make Chinese students feel at home.

Ling Ge, chair of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association York, said: "This event is not only an opportunity for our Chinese students to celebrate some important festivals in our calendar and feel at home, but it encourages diversified interdisciplinary communication and gives the wider community the chance to experience a flavour of Chinese culture.

“There are some important cultural ties between York and China and this is a fantastic opportunity for students, staff and the wider community to come together and celebrate.”

Guests will include representatives from the Chinese Council in Manchester and senior members of the university’s academic staff.
