River Ouse spectacle rises from the splashes

Residents and visitors will, after all, get to see a flotilla marking York's 800 years since being granted a charter to run its own affairs.

The event was originally planned for July's Charter Day but was postponed on account of heavy rainfall and rising river levels. Now it will go ahead on Sunday 26 August.

Hundreds of boats of varying shapes and sizes will travel along the city centre stretch of the river from lunchtime onwards. Organisers say people will be able to see it from any safe vantage point along the riverbanks between Naburn Marina and Clifton Ings. There will also be entertainment in Tower Gardens from 11 o’clock onwards.

Councillor Sonja Crisp, City of York Council cabinet member, said: “ I am delighted that we have been able to reschedule the flotilla, as I know that many people were looking forward to seeing it – and taking part in it.  It will be a brilliant addition to York’s Bank Holiday weekend.”

More details of the programme for the day will be available nearer the time on www.york800.com
