Produced by York Theatre Royal, Riding Lights Theatre Company and York Museums Trust and supported by City of York Council, it is the first time they will be performed in the Museum Gardens since 1988.
Each of the performances during August will be staged against the inspiring backdrop of St Mary's Abbey, conveying a biblical history of the world and the battle between good and evil. The plays have been performed since the fourteenth century and were revived in the 1950s being performed in the abbey ruins before moving to the city's Theatre Royal in the 1990s.
The production takes place from 2 August to 27 August with covered seating for 1,400 people being built around the abbey's ancient walls.
Dame Judi Dench, a previous performer, is a patron for the 2012 event. She said: “Having performed in the York Mystery Plays three times, I know the excitement that these events."
