The water firm has issued a warning for visitors to stay well clear as the temperatures continue to remain chillingly low across the region.
Yorkshire Water's catchment and recreation manager Geoff Lomas said: "Our reservoirs are popular attractions all year round but, with the cold spell set to continue over the next few days, we're concerned visitors may be tempted to walk on thin ice which has formed around the edges.
"Our advice is to stay well away,"
DROWNED
During the big freeze 13 years ago, eight people drowned in ice-related incidents around the UK. Five of these involved dog owners trying to rescue their pets.
Geoff added: "Although frozen reservoirs may seem safe to walk on, ice is very thin and the water beneath is likely to be very deep and extremely cold. Another danger is the strong undercurrents caused by the fact that water is being continually drawn into large submerged pipes.
"Our message is simple: Please take heed of the safety notices posted around our sites and stay off frozen reservoirs."
The advice from Yorkshire Water for those walking around reservoirs during a cold spell is:
- Don't be tempted to test the thickness of the ice; it is easy to slip from the bank and fall through;
- Parents should explain the dangers of playing on frozen reservoirs and lakes to their children;
- Dog owners should ensure they keep their pets on a lead;
- Reservoirs are dangerous. If you fall in, your life is in danger;
- Make sure you wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
