Best places to live in North Yorkshire

Where are the best places to live in North Yorkshire. Where would you recommend? Let us know why. Is it on account of the beautiful surroundings or the types of property on offer?Or is it the schools, the coffee and tea shop culture. Is it community life? Tell us what captivates you.

For instance, we know that York continues to win awards for the nation's favourite place to live and visit and, in a recent, study, Ripon was Yorkshire's city with the most residents vowing never to leave. See our report. But North Yorkshire has so many other gems where the quality of life is so good.

As the editor of this site, I'll throw in my two pennyworth.

We moved to the Vale of York twenty years ago and fell in love with the county immediately.

Each weekend, we shop in a different market town and visit a place of particular interest such as an abbey, priory, castle or historic home and garden. Let's face it; North Yorkshire is certainly not wanting in the tourism attraction department which explains why it draws millions to visit. Check out our reviews on BeautifulNorthYorkshire.com

Some folks choose to live here and for good reason. To get the most from village life, we have become involved in community and social matters and we've made many friends in the course of doing so.

The County of North Yorkshire road signs are a welcoming sight after working or visiting somewhere beyond its boundaries. While I recognise that it's good to travel, it's also good to come home.

Westow is a beautiful place to live - set in the Howardian Hills, a great little community of 300 people, fantastic pub - the Blacksmiths Arms that even does fish and chip takeaway! Its close to Malton, York, Castle Howard, Kirkham Priory is just down the road, and the River Derwent is great for fishing, walking along

It has to be SKipton by a long way. I have toured North Yorkshire many times both on my bike and in my campervan - Skipton is beautiful and has it all. An amazing High Street (That won best High Street in Britain apparently in 2009 beating Portobello Road and Kensington High Street in London, an amazing feat. Source: Academy of Urbanism awards), all those lovely independent shops in the ginnels and down side streets, heritage that stretches back a millenium, plenty of great atmosphere, a famous market outdoors FOUR DAYS A WEEK, the surroundings of the Dales, the most beautiful hills in the UK...I could go on. I love it and so do all of my family and friends, there can be no other winner!

oh ,just read this properly, you wanted to know why I choose Scarborough North Bay area, sorry. Ok, it's a quiet safe area, close enough to town and beach and countryside, people are friendly and look out for each other and for each other's property, in my experience anyhow. You can trust people with taking in your mail or children know they can approach you, it's almost oldfashioned in the friendly neighbourhood aspect. Clean air, clean streets, The council gardeneres, as they do all over Scarborough do a brilliant job planting public places, it's petfriendly, too, not too much traffic, no hassle. What more could anyone want? I just love living here. Truly.

Anywhere around York Racecourse. 10mins to train station, 10mins to city centre, huge green space, the Races and, of course, our fantastic community football club @PanthersFC

The best place to live in North Yorkshire is without doubt the village of Grewelthorpe. http://www.grewelthorpe.org.uk

It has a very strong feeling of community. Small enough for everyone to know each other but just (only just) big enough to maintain a village school, pub and church.

On the doorstep is the hidden gem that is Hackfall. http://www.hackfall.org.uk/ and the lovely market town of Masham is just 3 miles away.

I have been living in Australia for over 40 years since leaving South Yorkshire in the 70s. I have been back to the UK many times over the last 15 years, each time i leave the shores of the UK i become more homesick ( must be my age)i miss the country life and the slower pace and of the Yorkshire people and the general life style that comes with living in a village in Yorkshire.

I miss the place so bad, that i am considering relocating back, just need to convince the wife?now thats the hard bit. All the best to the people of Yorkshire you are so lucky to live in the most livable area of the world. Dennis
